What Is Fundoplication?

A Physical Repair to Your Body’s Anti-Reflux Valve

Think of fundoplication surgery as a long-term solution for chronic acid reflux and GERD. Performed by Dr. Ahmed Kamal in Dubai, this minimally invasive anti-reflux procedure strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), helping prevent acid reflux and chronic heartburn symptoms.

By restoring the natural function of the anti-reflux valve, fundoplication treatment provides lasting GERD relief, improved digestive health, and reduced dependence on acid reflux medication through a safe, minimally invasive approach.

How Does the Surgery Work?

Four Steps to Lasting Relief

  1. Identify the Weakened Valve – The surgeon locates the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) at the base of the esophagus.

  2. Wrap the Upper Stomach – The fundus is carefully wrapped around the LES area.

  3. Create a Physical Barrier – This reinforcement forms a permanent block against acid reflux.

  4. Maintain Normal Function – Food and liquids continue to pass naturally into the stomach.

Types of Fundoplication

Which Wrap Is Right for You?

Dr. Ahmed Kamal performs both Nissen and Toupet fundoplication laparoscopically. The right choice depends on your symptoms, esophageal motility, and hiatal hernia size. Both procedures are minimally invasive and aim to restore the natural anti-reflux barrier for long-term relief.

Toupet Fundoplication

Toupet fundoplication is a gentler, partial 270° wrap around the lower esophagus. It provides effective reflux control while allowing easier swallowing and a more natural digestive feel. This approach is ideal for patients with reduced esophageal motility and reduces the risk of post-operative difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).

  • 270° partial wrap — strong reflux control
  • Allows easier swallowing and a more natural feel
  • Ideal for patients with both normal or weak esophagus
  • Reduced risk of post-operative dysphagia

Nissen Fundoplication

Nissen fundoplication is the gold standard for patients with severe acid reflux. This technique wraps the upper stomach completely (360°) around the lower esophagus, creating a strong, permanent barrier against acid reflux. It’s highly effective for long-term relief and is best suited for patients with normal or near-normal esophageal motility.

  • Full 360° wrap — maximum reflux barrier
  • Highly effective for permanent, long-term relief
  • Best for properly selected patients
Strongest Protection

Dr. Kamal will recommend the most suitable technique after a detailed evaluation of your esophageal health, motility studies, and symptom history.

Key Benefits

Why Choose Laparoscopic Fundoplication?

A permanent surgical solution that treats the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Long-Term Reliability

Highly effective in controlling reflux and heartburn for years, often without the need for additional intervention.

Minimally Invasive

Performed laparoscopically, resulting in smaller incisions, minimal scarring, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery.

Eliminate Daily Medication

Many patients are able to stop daily acid-reducing medications (PPIs) after surgery, reducing long-term drug dependency.

Restores Natural Anatomy

Uses your own tissue to reinforce the anti-reflux barrier; no foreign implants required.

Fast Recovery

Most patients return home within 24 hours and resume normal activities within a few days.

Better Quality of Life

Reduces heartburn, regurgitation, and anxiety around meals, allowing you to eat and live comfortably.

Keyhole — 3–5 small incisions
Most patients stop PPIs completely

What to Expect After Your Surgery

Laparoscopic fundoplication has one of the fastest recovery profiles of any reflux surgery. Most patients are home the same day.

  1. Day 1

    Home After Surgery

The procedure takes 1 hour under general anesthesia. Most patients are discharged the same day or the following morning.

  2. Day 2–3

    Daily Activities

Patients can return to light daily activities. Start with clear liquids and progress to soft foods as comfort allows.

  3. Weeks 2–4

    Soft Diet & Exercise

Gradually move from soft foods to a normal diet. Light walking is encouraged, but avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity.

  4. Weeks 6+

    Full Normal Diet

Most patients can eat normally without restrictions. Heartburn and reflux symptoms are typically fully resolved, allowing a comfortable lifestyle.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure typically takes 1 hour under general anaesthesia. You will be in the operating room for approximately 2.5–3 hours including preparation and anaesthesia recovery. Most patients are discharged the same day or the morning after.

Most patients can stop daily PPI (proton pump inhibitor) medication entirely after fundoplication. The surgery creates a physical barrier that prevents acid reflux, removing the need for ongoing medication to manage symptoms.

Fundoplication is considered a permanent solution. Studies show over 90% of patients remain symptom-free at 10 years. A small percentage may experience symptom recurrence over time, but re-operation rates are low.

Revision surgery is technically possible but majority of the cases is not necessary. This is why thorough pre-operative assessment is critical to ensure the right candidates are selected.

Although, low risks include bleeding, infection, and anaesthesia complications. Specific risks include temporary difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), gas-bloat syndrome. Dr. Ahmed Kamal will discuss all risks in detail at your consultation.
