Endoscopic Treatment
for Acid Reflux (GERD)
For selected patients, acid reflux can be effectively treated without surgery using advanced endoscopic techniques performed through the mouth. Dr. Ahmed Kamal offers GERDx and Stretta, two minimally invasive procedures designed to strengthen the anti-reflux barrier and reduce chronic symptoms while avoiding surgical incisions.
What Is Endoscopic Reflux Treatment?
Endoscopic treatment uses a flexible camera (endoscope) passed through the mouth into the esophagus. The procedure is performed under sedation, involves no cuts or scars, and is typically completed as a same-day procedure.
These techniques help restore the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), reducing acid reflux and improving symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation. Dr. Ahmed Kamal selects the most appropriate approach based on a comprehensive patient evaluation.
Four Steps, No Incisions
-
A flexible camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the oesophagus — no cuts, no external marks.
-
The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve between oesophagus and stomach, is identified and assessed.
-
GERDx places reinforcing sutures at the gastro-oesophageal junction; Stretta delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the LES muscle.
-
The strengthened LES closes properly, preventing acid from refluxing — normal swallowing is fully preserved.
GERDx & Stretta: Two Proven Approaches
Dr. Ahmed Kamal offers both endoscopic procedures, selecting the most appropriate option after a thorough evaluation of your anatomy and reflux severity.
GERDx Procedure
Restoring the anti-reflux valve with precision sutures
How it works:
- Reinforces the anti-reflux valve with small precision sutures
- Tightens the junction between the esophagus and stomach
- Reduces acid reflux and improves valve function
- Improves symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation
Stretta Procedure
Strengthening the LES muscle with controlled energy
How it works:
- Delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the LES muscle
- Strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter
- Reduces abnormal relaxation of the anti-reflux valve
- Improves long-term reflux control without surgery
Important: Endoscopic treatments are effective for carefully selected patients. In cases of large hiatal hernia or severe reflux, surgical options such as fundoplication or LINX® may provide better long-term results. Dr. Ahmed Kamal will guide you to the right choice.
Who Is Suitable for Endoscopic Treatment?
You may be a good candidate if you match these criteria. A proper evaluation is essential to select the right treatment approach.
Mild to Moderate GERD
Symptoms are present but manageable — not yet at the stage requiring major surgery.
Partial Medication Response
PPIs provide some relief but you want to reduce long-term dependency on medication.
No Large Hiatal Hernia
Endoscopic techniques work best when there is no significant structural hernia present.
Prefer Non-Surgical Option
You are a candidate who prefers avoiding surgical incisions and general anaesthesia.
Pre-Procedure Evaluation
Endoscopy
Direct visual examination of the oesophagus and LES to assess anatomy and severity.
pH Study
24-hour acid monitoring to measure the frequency and severity of reflux episodes.
Manometry
Pressure testing of the oesophagus and LES to evaluate sphincter function.
Consultation
Dr. Ahmed Kamal reviews all findings and recommends the optimal procedure for your case.
Why Choose Endoscopic Treatment?
Endoscopic reflux treatment offers a safe, minimally invasive alternative for patients who want effective relief without the recovery demands of open surgery.
No Incisions
Entirely performed through the mouth, leaving no scars
Same-Day Discharge
Most patients go home within hours
Quick Recovery
Return to light activities within 1–2 days
Reduced Medication
Many patients reduce or eliminate daily PPI use
Minimally Invasive
Conscious sedation used for patient comfort
Proven Efficacy
GERDx and Stretta have clinically established outcomes for mild-to-moderate GERD
What to Expect After the Procedure
-
Day 1
Home Same Day
Procedure completed under sedation in under 1 hour. Discharged once sedation wears off — typically the same afternoon.
-
Days 2–3
Soft Diet & Rest
Mild throat discomfort is normal for 1–2 days. Soft foods recommended. No strenuous activity.
-
Week 2
Normal Activities Resume
Most patients return to work and normal diet within 1 week. Follow-up review with Dr. Ahmed Kamal scheduled.
-
Month 1+
Symptom Improvement
Reflux symptoms progressively reduce. Many patients notice significant improvement within 4–8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
GERDx uses small sutures placed at the gastro-oesophageal junction to mechanically tighten the valve and reduce reflux. Stretta uses radiofrequency energy to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, improving its resting tone. Both are performed endoscopically with no incisions. Dr. Kamal will recommend the appropriate option after evaluating your anatomy and reflux pattern.
Both procedures are performed under conscious sedation — you are not fully asleep but are deeply relaxed and comfortable. General anaesthesia is not required, which reduces risk and speeds recovery. You will not feel any pain during the procedure.
Each procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes. Including preparation and recovery from sedation, you can expect to be at the clinic for around 3–4 hours. Most patients are discharged the same day and can return home with a companion.
Many patients significantly reduce or completely eliminate their PPI use after GERDx or Stretta. Results vary depending on the severity of your reflux and which procedure is performed. Dr. Kamal will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
Endoscopic treatments are best suited for mild-to-moderate GERD without a large hiatal hernia. LINX® and fundoplication offer more durable results for moderate-to-severe reflux or when a hiatal hernia is present. Dr. Kamal will recommend the right procedure based on your individual evaluation.
Endoscopic procedures carry low procedural risk compared to surgery. Potential side effects include temporary throat soreness, mild bloating, and — rarely — difficulty swallowing that resolves within a few weeks. Serious complications are uncommon. All risks will be discussed in detail during your pre-procedure consultation.
